In the past month, many Care2 members have seen success with petitions they’ve created. Two times a month, we’ll post a roundup of some of the best Care2 member petitions, so you can see how citizens like you use online activism to make a difference.
More Than 110,000 Protest Killing of Baby Giraffe Marius at Copenhagen Zoo
Copenhagen Zoo sparked international outrage when it made the decision to slaughter Marius, an 18-month-old giraffe it seemed unsuitable for breeding. Zoo officials shot the otherwise healthy giraffe with a bolt gun in front of an audience that included children, then fed the carcass to lions and other carnivores in the zoo. When Care2 member Tenna Toftegaard heard the news, she was outraged — so she started a petition to fire Bengt Holst, Director of Research and Conservation at Copenhagen Zoo, who ordered the killing. The petition quickly gained steam, and more than 110,000 Care2 members signed on. The petition was featured on a number of media outlets, including:
A second petition asking for the zoo to be shut down entirely has earned over 100,000 signatures from dedicated activists. Demand justice for Marius by signing the petition today!
Victory! More Than 2,000 Demand to #LetBaileyRoby Hoop — And He’s Back In
Bailey Roby is a senior and talented basketball player at Mountain Vista High School in Colorado. But in a sudden and cruel twist, officials from the Colorado High School Activities Association deemed him ineligible to play because of his two prosthetic legs, which the CHSAA said posed a danger to other students. An outpouring of support ensued from Roby’s community members and classmates — the issue even sparked a hashtag, #LetBaileyRobyHoop. More than 2,000 people signed Gavyn Stegeman’s Care2 petition demanding the decision be reversed, and within less than 48 hours, it was successful. The petition earned attention from many local news outlets:
More Than 17,000 Tell The Pope To Stop Releasing Peace Doves
As part of a ceremonial practice, Pope Francis recently released peace doves from a Vatican window overlooking St. Peter’s Square. Tragically, the doves were immediately attacked by a crow and a seagull as thousands of people — including children — looked on. Care2 member Chris Wolverton created a petition asking the Pope to end this practice, which puts domesticated doves at risk due to their inability to detect and flee from prey. More than 17,300 Care2 activists signed on, and the petition earned plenty of media attention:
